President Latyna Young

Dr. Latyna Young was elected to the Vallejo City Unified School District Board of Trustees in November 2020 for area 4.Young is a lifelong learner and has worked in education for more than 45 years. Starting as a teacher in the VCUSD District, she also worked as a coordinator, vice-principal, principal, and director of student support services during her career with VCUSD. She retired from her full-time duties at Vallejo City Unified in 2010.
While not attending her duties as a board member, Dr. Young is an active member in Vallejo community organizations, including the president of the Fighting Back Partnership, which is committed to preventing and ending poverty and its effects in Vallejo and throughout Solano County. She is also a member of the Kappa Beta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA), the California Association of African American Superintendents and Administrators (CAAASA), and the Solano Napa chapter of the Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA).
A product of the Vallejo City Unified School District, she attended David Farragut Elementary School, Vallejo Junior High School, and graduated from Vallejo High School. After graduating from Vallejo High School, she earned her bachelor’s degree in applied behavioral science and a teaching credential from the University of California Davis. She also completed her administrative service credential at UC Berkeley. In addition, the educator earned two master’s degrees–one in early childhood and special education from Sonoma State and the other in counseling at the University of LaVerne. She completed her schooling with a doctorate in educational leadership in urban schools.
Dr. Young and her dog Tootsi Yoda reside in Vallejo.

Vice President John Fox

Trustee John Fox was elected in 2022 to the Vallejo City Unified School District Board of Education for his second four-year term.Fox, who is currently a third-grade teacher at the Mt. Diablo School District, has been an elementary school educator for more than 25 years. He has also served as a reading intervention and program specialist in the education system.
When he is not teaching, Fox is very active in the community. He is the president of the Solano County School Board Association, president of his HOA, a board member of the Glen Cove Community Association, and the vice-chair of the Stonewall Democrats of Solano County. He is also a member of the Central Democrats of Solano County, where he was named the Southern Democrat of the Year in 2021.
A native Michigander, Fox earned his bachelor’s of art in liberal studies from Sonoma State University and his administrative credential from St. Mary’s College.
Fox is single and lives in Vallejo with his two dachshunds dogs, Otto and Theo. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with friends, walking, hiking and gardening.

Trustee Christy Gardner

Email: cgardner@vcusd.orgTrustee Christy Gardner was elected in 2020 for area 2 after being appointed to the Vallejo City Unified School District Board of Trustees in February 2019.
Gardner entered the education sector as a second career. After working in the private sector for more than 16 years, she returned to the classroom as a substitute teacher. She worked a variety of teaching and administrative jobs, before her official retirement from the California Department of Education’s Charter School Division in 2015.
The two-term trustee earned her Bachelor’s of art in drama with a minor in speech from California State University, Chico. She also received her teaching credential from Chico State and her administrative credential from California State University, Sacramento. She later earned her master’s degree from California State University, East Bay, in educational leadership.
In her spare time, Gardner is also the secretary of the Vallejo Sister City Association.
Gardner lives with her husband, George Bond, and her daughter, Meghan. She enjoys reading and traveling.
