Former Grant School Property

Based on the air monitoring conducted, there is no evidence that airborne asbestos fibers were detected around the perimeter of the Former Grant School during the three days of testing (July 8–10, 2026). Eight air samples were collected each day from locations surrounding the property, and the report concludes that no airborne fibers, either asbestos or other, were detected in any of the samples collected.

No airborne asbestos fibers were detected during the monitoring period.

The testing was conducted using OSHA-adopted Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM) methods. The report notes that the industry standard for releasing an asbestos abatement work area is 0.01 fibers per cubic centimeter (f/cc). All perimeter samples were reported well below that threshold (generally reported as less than 0.002–0.004 f/cc), and the report concludes that no airborne fibers, either asbestos or other, were detected in any of the samples collected over the three-day monitoring period.

The former Grant School property is owned by Vallejo City Unified School District. The District is responsible for securing the site, coordinating environmental testing, overseeing demolition and determining the property's long-term future through a public process.

Although Grant School closed in 1989, the campus remained structurally intact for many years. Prior to the May 2026 fire, VCUSD had been actively working to improve site conditions by securing the buildings, removing overgrown vegetation and coordinating with local agencies to address unauthorized encampments and trespassing. After the fire, the District was required to wait while the Vallejo Fire Department and Vallejo Police Department conducted their investigation before emergency demolition planning could move forward. Once investigators released the site, VCUSD immediately began environmental testing, emergency planning and the demolition contracting process.

The demolition is being managed by Vallejo City Unified School District as an emergency project. The District will pursue all available funding sources and cost recovery opportunities, including insurance and any other sources that may be available, as appropriate. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.

VCUSD anticipates selecting a demolition contractor in late July 2026, with demolition expected to begin in August 2026 and continue for approximately six to eight weeks, depending on weather, site conditions and other factors. After demolition is complete, the property will remain secured and maintained while the District evaluates long-term options for the site. VCUSD expects to present long-term property recommendations to the Governing Board by July 2027.
