Special Education

The Special Education Department helps to ensure that Vallejo's students with special needs are given the support they need in general education and can also access, as needed, a continuum of specialized instruction through their Individualized Education Program (IEP). Our department and the Vallejo City Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) provide leadership to schools so that all students will have educational success. As per Federal Law, specialized instruction should always meet the unique needs of the student, in all areas of suspected disability, and be reasonably calculated to provide educational benefits in the least restrictive environment.

A Family Guide to the Special Education Process

The goal of the special education process is to determine if your child has a disability and requires specialized instruction and supports, thereby ensuring they receive a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).

Section 504

Section 504 is a civil rights law that protects the rights of individuals with disabilities. A Section 504 Plan requires classroom teachers and other school staff to provide necessary accommodations for Section 504-eligible students to participate in programs and activities. These accommodations may support physical, instructional, or social-emotional needs.

Special Education Community Advisory Committee

The Community Advisory Committee for Special Education (CAC) is a mandated organization that advises the district on the unique requirements of individuals with exceptional needs. Members include interested parents of regular and special education students, representatives of public and private agencies, regular and special education teachers, and others interested in the delivery of services to special education students.
