Understanding the ELPAC
A Guide for VCUSD Families

The ELPAC is California’s primary assessment system that shows how your child is growing in their English language proficiency, and helps our schools adapt to better support students in the years ahead. By measuring key skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, these results guide our teachers in delivering high-quality instruction and help us ensure every English learner—from early elementary through high school—is prepared for continued learning, college, and future careers.

The Summative ELPAC is administered in the spring of each school year, while the Initial ELPAC is given when an eligible student first enrolls. English learner students from kindergarten through high school take assessments in four core areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
