7-11 Committee

Public school districts nationwide are facing significant enrollment declines, which, due to reduced funding, are leading to school closures and consolidations. Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) is no exception.

7-11 Committee Overview

Since the 2018-19 school year, VCUSD has experienced a 21 percent drop in enrollment, a trend we anticipate continuing. Rising housing costs, smaller family sizes, and increasing school choices have left many public school districts with too many sites serving too few students.

To ensure continued financial stability and educational quality for our students, the VCUSD Board of Education has directed the district to evaluate one of our key assets: real property. We have engaged an independent organization to conduct an equity impact analysis on four schools: Loma Vista Environmental Science Academy, Steffan Manor Elementary, Mare Island Health and Fitness Academy, and Pennycook Elementary. We selected these schools based on enrollment numbers, proximity to other schools, and facility conditions. Pending closure and consolidation determination by our Governing Board, we may relocate Vallejo Charter School.

Based on the findings, we must consider closing and consolidating school sites to reduce annual operational costs and establish a formal 7-11 committee to initiate this process.
