Dr. Latyna Young was elected to the Vallejo City Unified School District Board of Trustees in November 2020 for area 4.

Young is a lifelong learner and has worked in education for more than 45 years. Starting as a teacher in the VCUSD District, she also worked as a coordinator, vice-principal, principal, and director of student support services during her career with VCUSD. She retired from her full-time duties at Vallejo City Unified in 2010.

While not attending her duties as a board member, Dr. Young is an active member in Vallejo community organizations, including the president of the Fighting Back Partnership, which is committed to preventing and ending poverty and its effects in Vallejo and throughout Solano County. She is also a member of the Kappa Beta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA), the California Association of African American Superintendents and Administrators (CAAASA), and the Solano Napa chapter of the Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA).  

A product of the Vallejo City Unified School District, she attended David Farragut Elementary School, Vallejo Junior High School, and graduated from Vallejo High School. After graduating from Vallejo High School, she earned her bachelor’s degree in applied behavioral science and a teaching credential from the University of California Davis. She also completed her administrative service credential at UC Berkeley. In addition, the educator earned two master’s degrees–one in early childhood and special education from Sonoma State and the other in counseling at the University of LaVerne. She completed her schooling with a doctorate in educational leadership in urban schools.  

Dr. Young and her dog Tootsi Yoda reside in Vallejo.
