Student Trustee Recognition for Year of Service

The Vallejo City Unified School District recognized Student Trustees Beroj Arbab of Jesse Bethel High School, Sophia Jacobo Valdez of Vallejo High School, and Zanyah DeLeon of John Finney High School for their dedicated service on the Board of Education during the 2025–26 school year. Through their leadership, advocacy, and commitment to representing student voices, the student trustees made meaningful contributions to their schools, the district, and the Vallejo community.

Three New Student Trustees Named for 2026-27 School Year

The Vallejo City Unified School District announced its Student Trustee Representatives for the 2026–27 school year. The Governing Board welcomed Sarai Portis, a 10th-grade student at Jesse Bethel High School; Samara Williams Adams, an 11th-grade student at John Finney High School; and Ibrahim Edais, an 11th-grade student at Vallejo High School. As Student Trustees, they were selected to represent their peers' voices and perspectives and to serve as student representatives to the Board of Education during the upcoming school year.

Federal Terrace and Vallejo Adult School Principals Approved

The Vallejo City Unified School District is pleased to announce the appointments of Kelsey Corrales and Dr. Christi Glasco as principals. Corrales, who brings experience as a vice principal at West Contra Costa Adult Education and with Seneca Family of Agencies, will lead Vallejo Adult School. Glasco, a former principal at Highland Elementary and Mare Island Health and Fitness Academy, has been named principal of Federal Terrace Elementary School.

New Graduation Requirements and Timeline for New High School Classes

The Governing Board heard the revisions to the district’s High School Graduation Requirements in our policies that will align them with current best practices and expand equitable access to Languages Other Than English (LOTE) courses for all students. The updates also established implementation timelines for new graduation requirements, including Ethnic Studies for the graduating Class of 2030 and Personal Finance for the graduating Class of 2031. By setting these effective dates now, the district will ensure that students entering high school have a full four years to complete the required coursework and successfully prepare for graduation.

Board Holds Public Hearing for 2026-27 District Budget and LCAP

The Vallejo City Unified School District Governing Board held public hearings on the proposed 2026–27 budgets and Local Control and Accountability Plans (LCAPs) for both VCUSD and Vallejo Charter School. These key planning documents guide the allocation of resources to support student success and ensure the district remains financially stable while continuing to invest in programs and services for students. Developed in response to declining enrollment and rising operational costs, the proposed budgets reflect a commitment to responsible fiscal planning and the long-term sustainability of district programs.

Trustees also reviewed the 2026–27 LCAPs, which outline the goals, actions, services, and expenditures aimed at improving student outcomes, with a particular focus on supporting low-income students, English learners, and foster youth. Through the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), VCUSD is projected to receive nearly $145 million in funding, including approximately $38.9 million generated by high-needs student populations. Both plans are updated annually in consultation with students, families, staff, and community members to ensure resources remain aligned with local priorities and student needs.

The Board will vote on all four documents at next week's regular board meeting.

SELPA Plan Approved

Following a public hearing, the Governing Board approved the Vallejo City Unified School District Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) Governance and Administration Plan, Annual Service Plan, and Annual Budget Plan. The plans outline how the district will continue providing high-quality special education services and supports to students with disabilities while ensuring compliance with state and federal requirements. District leaders also highlighted significant progress over the past year in special education, including increasing the percentage of seniors with disabilities on track to graduate to 92 percent, reducing overdue Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) from nearly 1,900 to 143, and ending a 13-year cycle of significant disproportionality. The approved plans represent more than $50 million in state and federal funding dedicated to supporting students with exceptional needs and advancing equitable outcomes across the district.
