Emergency Resolution Approved for Grant Elementary School

The Board approved a resolution declaring an emergency at the former Grant Elementary School site following significant fire damage and the discovery of other hazardous conditions. The resolution authorizes the District to move forward immediately with demolition, hazardous materials abatement, remediation, debris removal, site stabilization, and other necessary emergency work to protect public health and safety.

District leaders met with South Vallejo residents, neighborhood organizations, and community leaders on Monday, July 13, who expressed concerns about safety, environmental conditions, and the future of the property. The Board's action allows the District to respond promptly to those concerns while continuing to provide oversight.

The resolution does not award a contract or select a contractor; individual contracts and emergency actions will continue to be reported to the Board in accordance with state law.

Board Delegates Emergency Response Authority

The Board also approved a resolution delegating emergency response authority to the Superintendent, or designee, allowing the District to respond quickly when emergency situations threaten the safety of students, staff, facilities, or essential services.

The resolution is not specific to the former Grant Elementary School and does not authorize any particular project or expenditure. Instead, it allows the District to respond immediately when emergencies threaten the safety of students, staff, facilities, or essential public services without waiting for the next scheduled Board meeting.

District leaders explained that emergencies such as storm damage, infrastructure failures, or other unforeseen incidents often require an immediate response to protect people and property. Any actions taken under this authority will remain subject to Governing Board review and oversight as required by California law.
