Cooper Elementary Brings Learning to Life at STEAM Night
At Cooper Elementary’s recent STEAM Night, students and families experienced this first-hand through an evening of interactive, hands-on activities designed to make learning fun, engaging, and meaningful.
STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) is more than just a collection of subjects; it’s an approach to learning that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. At Cooper Elementary’s recent STEAM Night, students and families experienced this first-hand through an evening of interactive, hands-on activities designed to make learning fun, engaging, and meaningful.
Cooper Elementary partnered with BrickSpace, a lab and community center based in Benicia. BrickSpace provides Lego building and STEAM hands-on programs for students from early childhood to 8th grade that promote critical thinking and address many different learning modalities.
Every activity encouraged students to think critically, collaborate, and explore new ideas, from building towering structures from toothpicks and marshmallows to creating slime, conducting science experiments, and problem-solving through LEGO challenges. These experiences went beyond the traditional classroom setting, supporting VCUSD’s strategic plan and our commitment to a vibrant culture of teaching and learning.
"STEAM Night was so much fun! It was a great opportunity for our community to come together and explore the world of STEAM,” Cooper Elementary Principal Gretchen Ledda said. “Our partnership with Brickspace allows our students and parents to work together, think critically, and problem-solve through fun and engaging experiments."
Beyond the learning, STEAM Night also served as a meaningful opportunity to strengthen relationships within the school community. Families engaged in activities alongside their children, while teachers, expanded learning staff, and community partners worked together to create a welcoming, supportive space for exploration.
STEAM Night at Cooper Elementary demonstrates how education can be engaging and community-driven. By bringing students, families, and educators together in a shared learning experience, the event demonstrated the power of curiosity, collaboration, and hands-on discovery in shaping a lifelong love of learning.
