VALLEJO, Calif. — The Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) announces the appointment of Matthew B. Chamberlain as the district’s new assistant superintendent of human resources, effective July 1, 2025.

Chamberlain brings 27 years of experience in public education, spanning roles as a teacher, site administrator, and district leader. His background reflects a commitment to educational equity, strategic workforce development, and collaborative leadership.

Chamberlain most recently served as Director of Human Resources for the Pittsburg Unified School District, a position he has held since 2021. During his tenure, he led impactful diversity recruitment efforts, developed a leadership development cohort to prepare future administrators, and achieved a 94 percent staff retention rate. He also managed collective bargaining for certificated and classified units and coordinated grievance resolutions. He implemented student safety initiatives such as the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System and Be a Mentor programs.

Before that, Chamberlain was a site administrator for 16 years, including time as principal of Alhambra High School in Martinez Unified School District and principal of Venture School, an alternative education campus in San Ramon Valley Unified.

Chamberlain began his career as a social science and law teacher and later served as an assistant principal in secondary schools for nearly a decade. His experience is backed by a strong academic foundation, including a Juris Doctor, a master of arts in teaching, and a bachelor’s in history with a minor in education, all from the University of California, Berkeley.

“We are excited to welcome Matthew Chamberlain to VCUSD,” Vallejo City Unified School District  Superintendent Rubén Aurelio said. “His proven record of strengthening retention, cultivating leadership, and championing inclusive hiring practices makes him a powerful addition to our team. His work aligns with our mission to foster an environment where students and staff thrive.”

In response, Chamberlain states, “I am truly grateful for the confidence in me. I look forward to working alongside the VCUSD Board of Education, Superintendent Aurelio, district leaders, and the broader community to support and strengthen our schools in Vallejo. I am eager and excited to get started and am committed to serving our scholars, staff, and families with integrity and dedication.”

Chamberlain has been recognized by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) as the 2025 Region 6 Personnel Administrator of the Year and was a state finalist for the award. He also earned statewide recognition in 2020 as a finalist for Secondary Schools Principal of the Year. He currently serves as ACSA Region 6 President for 2024-2025, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to leadership and professional advocacy.

Beyond education, Chamberlain has served the community through Scouting America and was inducted into the Castro Valley High School Athletic Hall of Fame for his coaching contributions. He lives with his wife Katy, and they have three adult children. He enjoys cheering on the Cal football and basketball teams in his spare time.
