VALLEJO, Calif. — Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) announces that Superintendent Rubén Aurelio has been selected to serve on the California Practitioners Advisory Group (CPAG) as Superintendent at-large. His appointment will be presented to the California State Board of Education (SBE) for approval during its Nov. 2025 meeting, under Item 01 – SBE Priorities.

The California Practitioners Advisory Group, established by the State Board of Education, provides critical guidance to the state on federal education policy and accountability systems. The group advises on the implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), ensuring that policies reflect the realities of schools across the state and support equitable outcomes for all students.

“Serving on CPAG is an incredible opportunity to represent Vallejo and the important work happening in our schools,” said VCUSD Superintendent Aurelio. “At VCUSD, we are deeply committed to equity, innovation, and preparing every student for success. I look forward to sharing the voices and experiences of our students, families, and educators as we work together to strengthen education for all California students.”

Since joining VCUSD as superintendent on July 1, 2024, Aurelio has led the district through a period of renewal and strategic transformation, focusing on fiscal stability, student achievement, and community trust. Under his leadership, VCUSD has exited long-term state receivership while maintaining its commitment to equity, innovation, and student-centered learning.

VCUSD Board President John Fox stated, "Superintendent Aurelio's appointment to CPAG highlights the progress and renewed sense of purpose within VCUSD. His leadership has inspired collaboration and confidence across our district. We’re proud that Vallejo’s perspective on equity and student success will help shape the future of education in California.”

Once approved by the State Board of Education, Superintendent Aurelio will join a diverse group of educators, administrators, and practitioners from across California who advise the SBE and the California Department of Education on educational accountability, school improvement, and policy implementation for a two-year term.
