Vallejo Unified School District Hires Rubén Fernández as Assistant Superintendent of Business Services and Operations
VCUSD announces Rubén Fernández as Assistant Superintendent of Business Services and Operations.
VALLEJO, Calif. – The Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) has named Rubén Fernández its new Assistant Superintendent of Business Services and Operations. He begins his position on April 7, 2025. Fernández brings extensive experience in school district finance, operational leadership, and strategic planning to the role.
As Assistant Superintendent, Fernández will oversee the district’s financial and business operations, including the bond program, ensure fiscal responsibility and operational efficiency, and provide safe, clean, and appropriate facilities, learning environments, and transportation services to enhance student achievement. His leadership will be critical in managing resources that support student learning and maintain the district’s economic health.
Most recently, Fernández served as the Assistant Superintendent of Business services for Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District, where he managed financial operations, payroll services, and policy development initiatives to enhance transparency and efficiency. Before that, he held leadership roles at Walnut Creek School District and Benicia Unified School District, successfully managing multi-million-dollar budgets, modernizing financial systems, and overseeing facility planning and bond programs.
“Rubén Fernández is a strategic leader with a deep understanding of school finance and operations,” VCUSD Superintendent Rubén Aurelio said. “His expertise in fiscal responsibility and resource management will be an asset as we continue to align our financial strategies with the district’s mission of student success. He is also recognized for his ability to foster collaboration among stakeholders and strengthen relationships with municipalities and county offices, further reinforcing our commitment to transparency and community engagement.”
Fernández is committed to building strong financial foundations that directly impact student achievement. He actively participates in professional organizations focused on school business administration and leadership development.

Fernández holds a Bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Riverside, and a Master’s in education in educational leadership. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate at the University of Southern California.
