VCUSD Announces Teacher of the Year

Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) is proud to announce Ms. Sarah Ruiz, a fourth grade teacher at Cave Language Academy, as the 2026 VCUSD Teacher of the Year.

Ruiz is in her ninth year of teaching at Cave Language Academy, where she serves as a Spanish bilingual teacher in the dual immersion program. Known for her instructional expertise, creativity, and passion, Ruiz creates an engaging, safe, rigorous, and supportive learning environment that helps students achieve their goals.

Ruiz shares, “Teaching is what I always wanted to do!”

As part of the selection process, the Teacher of the Year Selection Committee visited classrooms across the district, focusing on VCUSD instructional priorities. Ruiz’s classroom stood out as an environment where students clearly understand the purpose of their learning, feel supported and valued, remain highly engaged, and are challenged through rigorous instruction leading to meaningful results.

Beyond the classroom, Ruiz is deeply involved in the Cave Language Academy community. She supports students through after school intervention and enrichment, participates in school events, serves on leadership teams and committees, and regularly mentors colleagues. Her leadership extends beyond the school site through district collaborations and leadership roles, reflecting her strong commitment to service and advocacy.

Colleagues describe Ruiz as inspiring and empathetic, and an educator who motivates both students and peers to grow and succeed.

A colleague adds, “Sarah inspires me to be a better teacher every day. She’s the kind of educator I wish I’d had growing up, someone who refuses to give up on their students and goes above and beyond to help them reach their goals.” 

Her students describe her as kind, fair, funny, and someone who makes learning meaningful and enjoyable.
