The Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) is proud to highlight the tremendous impact of the “Leader in Me” program across Solano Widenmann Leadership Academy (SWLA), Pennycook Elementary, and Cave Language Academy.

“Leader in Me” is a comprehensive framework that nurtures student leadership, fosters a culture of trust, and boosts academic success. According to the “Leader in Me” website, schools participating in the program are located in more than 50 countries worldwide. The program is founded on the belief that everyone has the potential to lead.

“Leader in Me” was initiated at Solano Widenmann Leadership Academy (SWLA) in 2022 under the leadership of Principal Kimberly Mitchell-Lewis and has already shown significant positive outcomes in student behavior, attendance, and academic performance. Principal Mitchell-Lewis brought her extensive experience with “Leader in Me” from her successful implementation at Pennycook Elementary, which began in 2018.

“The goal is to support and celebrate student worth and potential utilizing the “Leader in Me” process,” says Principal Mitchell-Lewis.

Solano Widenmann recently showcased its progress during a community event. Students and teachers led panels and guided tours highlighting the program's success. The event was attended by families, district staff, and community members, providing an up-close view of how the program fosters leadership and positive growth. One parent shared how she specifically transferred her daughter to SWLA to benefit from the program because she knew about its positive reputation and impact.

Since its launch at Solano Widenmann, the “Leader in Me” program has made strides in creating a positive school culture by integrating leadership skills into students’ daily routines. In fall 2023, the school introduced a designated leadership period for all students, from TK through eighth grade, ensuring a consistent focus on developing essential leadership habits. These sessions, scheduled during the third period for middle school grades, are supported by a revised bell schedule that provides teachers with dedicated time for professional development on “Leader in Me” practices.

Teacher and participant in the “Leader in Me” program, Julie Hansell says, “The “Leader in Me” process has become a vital part of how staff and students conduct themselves, guided by core habits and practices that drive positive change. In our third year, we’re proud to grow staff leadership through structured input, design teams, and collaboration while expanding opportunities for students to lead in new ways, such as our community visitation day. This year, we’re also increasing academic goal-setting alongside behavior and attendance goals, reflecting the deeper application of these habits.”

The benefits and impact of “Leader in Me”:

  • Skills for Life: Students consistently practice leadership habits that support self-regulation, positive relationships, effective communication, and goal setting.
  • Improved School Culture: The program has significantly reduced suspension rates—dropping from 13.25 percent in the 2022-23 school year to just 1.5 percent in 2024-25. Additionally, attendance rates and academic performance have shown marked improvement.
  • Community and Engagement: The school hosts events like “Wildcat Wednesday” celebrations, student-led conferences, and leadership days to involve families and the broader community in students’ learning journeys.

The “Leader in Me” program continues to expand within the district, with Hogan Middle School joining the efforts alongside SWLA, Pennycook, and Cave Language Academy. VCUSD is committed to nurturing a culture of excellence, growth, and community partnership by fostering student and staff leadership. Together, we are building leaders who will positively impact the world around them.
