VCUSD Completes Nearly $35,000 Beautification Project at Federal Terrace Elementary

VALLEJO, Calif. — Vallejo City Unified School District has completed a nearly $35,000 campus beautification project designed to improve privacy, strengthen school identity, and create a colorful, welcoming environment at Federal Terrace Elementary School.

The project added custom privacy screens along campus fencing on Daniels Avenue, Rogers Street, and Selfridge Street, as well as pole banners and colorful vinyl graphics near the school’s main entrance.

Inspired by students’ perspectives, nearly all the illustrations were drawn from photographs taken at VCUSD schools or depict real homes, landmarks, and natural elements found throughout Vallejo. The images were created on an oversized scale to provide an immersive experience for students and families as they arrive at and leave campus.

“Our students pass these fences nearly every school day, so we wanted to consider how the environment could influence their mood and mindset as they begin their day,” VCUSD Webmaster Supervisor and graphic designer of the images, Victorio Suarez-Hevia, said. “Students deserve to feel safe, welcomed, and excited to come to school. We also wanted the designs to reflect the pride we take in our schools and the Vallejo community.”

The new graphics were designed to provide additional privacy on campus while warmly welcoming families at arrival and dismissal. They also offer students an opportunity to see familiar people, places, and elements of their community represented at school.

“Our schools should be places where students feel safe, welcomed, and proud to belong,” VCUSD Superintendent Rubén Aurelio said. “This project reflects the spirit of Federal Terrace and the students and families who make it such an important part of the Vallejo community.”

The project aligns with the district’s Local Control and Accountability Plan goal of creating safe, supportive, and engaging learning environments. Funding came from LCAP Action 2.9, Facilities Improvements, which supports improvements to school facilities and learning environments. The project cost approximately $35,000.

“This project improved campus privacy while celebrating the students, learning, and community that make Federal Terrace special,” Federal Terrace Principal Christi Glasco said. “We are excited for our families and neighbors to see their school represented in such a bright and welcoming way.”

The district will evaluate opportunities to implement similar improvements at other VCUSD campuses, based on school needs and available funding.
