VCUSD Provides Update on Former Grant School Fire and Property Remediation Planning

VALLEJO, Calif. - Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) continues to work closely with local authorities following the fire that occurred at the former Grant School property located at 740 Fifth Street on the morning of May 24, 2026.

While the former Grant School site has been closed since 1989 and has not served students for more than three decades, it remains an important part of Vallejo's history and holds memories for generations of families who attended school there. We recognize the concern this incident has created for neighbors and community members and will continue to keep the public informed as we move forward.

The Vallejo Fire Department and Vallejo Police Department continue to investigate the cause and circumstances surrounding the fire. Out of respect for that process, no remediation work can begin until investigators have completed their work and released the site.

In the meantime, the district has taken immediate steps to secure the property. Temporary fencing has been installed around the perimeter, and security personnel have been assigned to monitor the site to help prevent unauthorized access and protect the surrounding neighborhood. 

"Our first priority is the safety of our community," said Superintendent Ruben Aurelio. "We are grateful that no one was injured and appreciate the swift response of the Vallejo Fire Department and the assisting agencies. As the investigation continues, we are focused on securing the site and developing a responsible path forward."

Prior to the fire, the district had already begun planning for the eventual remediation of the property. The fire has accelerated the need to address the site's future, and VCUSD is currently evaluating options that may include demolishing the remaining structures and cleaning up fire-damaged materials. Any future work will be conducted in accordance with all applicable environmental, health, and safety requirements.

We also understand that community members may have questions about other closed or closing school sites throughout the district. VCUSD is reviewing security measures at unused properties and assessing additional safeguards where appropriate. The district is taking proactive steps to protect its facilities and maintain safe conditions for neighboring residents and businesses.

The district recognizes the significance of the former Grant School property and the memories it holds for many Vallejo families. We will continue to communicate openly with the community as the investigation progresses and decisions regarding the site's future are made.
