VALLEJO, Calif. — The newest members of the Vallejo City Unified School District transportation fleet have arrived.

To celebrate the occasion, one of the buses was unveiled outside the district office, adorned with a large red bow, where members of the VCUSD Governing Board gathered for a commemorative photo. Each trustee signed the underside of the wheelchair ramp, leaving a lasting mark on a bus that will serve Vallejo students for years to come.

Newly appointed Director of Transportation Donyae Tilson highlighted the bus's modern safety and operational features, including seat belts for every passenger, interior safety cameras, a backup camera, an efficient diesel engine designed to reduce operating costs, and a child-check safety alert system that requires drivers to walk to the back of the bus at the end of every route to help ensure no student is ever left behind.

While the district has faced difficult decisions, including school consolidations, its commitment to student safety remains unchanged. For students who rely on district transportation, the bus reflects VCUSD's continued investment in providing safe, reliable transportation that supports student success every day.

"Change can be challenging, but it also creates opportunities to strengthen the services we provide to students," said Marin Trujillo, executive director of business and operations. "As we consolidate resources across the district, we're able to make meaningful investments like these new buses, which offer modern, dependable transportation for students who rely on it. We look forward to welcoming students back this fall with resources that support their success both inside and outside the classroom."

For many students and families, the school day begins and ends on a school bus. With the addition of the new buses, those daily rides will be safer, more reliable, and equipped with the latest features to support students throughout the school year.

Each bus costs just under $200,000 and joins VCUSD's fleet of 34 buses. The buses were purchased using capital funds designated for facilities and equipment, which cannot be used for salaries or employee benefits.

VCUSD thanks the Vallejo community for investing in students and making improvements like this possible.
