On November 2, 2020, William Spalding assumed the role of superintendent for the Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD), leveraging his extensive 35-year background in the field of education. Before this appointment, Spalding had been absent from the district for 17 years, having previously served as a vice principal at Jesse Bethel High School. However, he returned to take the helm of the TK-12 district.

As superintendent of VCUSD, Spalding oversees the school district's day-to-day operations, encompassing 20 schools and approximately 1,200 employees.

Having dedicated his entire career to Northern California schools, Spalding's journey led him to VCUSD following two years as superintendent for the Galt Joint Union High School District and another two years at Dos Palos Oro Loma Joint Unified School District. His passion for students also saw him contributing his expertise to the Washington Unified School District in Sacramento and the San Juan Unified School District. Spalding began his educational career in 1987, starting out in the Winters Joint Unified School District following his college education.

Spalding's academic journey includes earning a bachelor's degree in International Relations from San Francisco State University and a master's degree in Educational Organization and Leadership from the University of San Francisco.
