Board Brief: Aug. 23, 2023

VALLEJO, Calif. - Here are a few highlights from the Aug. 23 board meeting and the complete agenda packet

Board Clears Charter of Revocation
The Board voted 5-0 to lift the conditions outlined in the agreement between Griffin Technology Academies (GTA) and VCUSD. After issuing a notice of violation to four GTA charter schools in April 2022, VCUSD and GTA entered into an agreement to pause the revocation proceedings. At the same time, the parties negotiate a “last-chance agreement.” The deal included 19 conditions addressing governance, facilities, business/fiscal, foundation, and instructional program. VCUSD provided oversight, while GTA brought its educational program, budgetary practices, and operations up to the standard expected of public schools, consistent with requirements in the agreement.

As the charter authorizer, it is our continued responsibility to ensure students receive a high-quality education and that the charter school complies with the law and the terms of its approved charter.

Meeting Held In Honor of Student and Teacher
The meeting was in memory of two members of our community who passed away recently—Jesse Bethel student Jordan John and teacher Larry Kurnarsky.

The next regular board meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 5 p.m. Visit vcusd.org for details. You can also view videos of previous board meetings on YouTube by searching VCUSD Communications.
