Rubén Aurelio Selected as next Superintendent of Vallejo City Unified School District

The Vallejo City Unified Board of Education is pleased to announce the selection of Rubén Aurelio as the new Vallejo City Unified School District Superintendent. The Board unanimously selected Mr. Aurelio as the finalist at the Special Closed Session Board Meeting on March 16, 2024, to replace retiring Superintendent William Spalding.

Mr. Aurelio comes to VCUSD with a distinguished career in education. Rubén Aurelio is currently the Superintendent in the St. Helena Unified School District. Prior to that Mr. Aurelio served as the Associate Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer of the Berkeley Unified School District and West Contra Costa Unified School District. He also served in the San Leandro Unified School District for 11 years as Director of Assessment and Data and Assistant Director of Technology, Assessment, Research and Evaluation. Additionally, he has served in both principal and teaching positions.

School District Board President Dr. Young stated “We are very pleased with the selection of Mr. Aurelio to be our next superintendent. We look forward to his leadership to continue to build on VCUSD’s Strategic Plan and Portrait of a Graduate, with a laser-like focus on equitable opportunities and equitable outcomes for all our students. His background in nearby urban school districts and his proven commitment to equity will make him not just an asset to VCUSD, but an asset to the community of Vallejo.”

Mr. Aurelio is a charismatic leader whose strongest skill is his ability to collaborate and build relationships. In St. Helena Unified, he was able to bridge the gap between two very distinct community groups, Hispanic/Latino and White. To fully engage the community, he worked with his team to hold meetings at the local apartment complex recreation centers. One of his strengths is the relationships he establishes with students, staff, and the community.

Mr. Aurelio grew up near Los Angeles in a monolingual Spanish-speaking home as the youngest of five children. His parents immigrated from Argentina to the United States and worked in food services and manufacturing. He earned a B.A. degree in Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley, a Master’s degree from California State University, East Bay, and is certified as a Chief Business Official. Mr. Aurelio is a proud first- generation college graduate and is proud that his entire education has been in public schools.

Mr. Aurelio stated “I am thrilled and honored to work with our Board of Trustees in Vallejo City Unified School District. One aspect of VCUSD that drew my attention was the commitment to equitable outcomes for all students. So much so that the district has purposefully named it as the first pillar in their strategic plan. I’ve spent the majority of my career fighting for equitable outcomes. Vallejo feels like home.”

Superintendent Aurelio’s appointment was approved on April 10, 2024, at a Regular Meeting of the Governing Board. Mr. Aurelio is scheduled to begin his role as Superintendent on July 1, 2024
